http://www.oakvillebeaver.com/news/article/184429# By Hiba Kesebi, Special to the Oakville Beaver Jun 13, 2008 Cassie Touched the Hearts of Paramedics For more than half of her life, four-year-old Cassie Lyons has fought cancer, weekly chemo sessions, the side affects of steroids and one injection after the other. Today, Friday, June 13, Tim Nykamp and nine other Halton paramedics will take part in Hamilton's Relay for Life, as the OPSEU Local 207 team, to help Cassie battle cancer. "I've never done anything like this to a patient, but Cassie really touched me -- she's resilient. When she gets knocked down, she gets back going," Nykamp explained, adding that the team will be pushing Cassie on a stretcher for a few laps. Unlike three months ago, this time around, Cassie will sit on the stretcher completely aware of her surrounding and Nykamp will be pushing her with a smile, and a sigh of relief. Late Marchof this year, Cassie's energy died down, she started to make a sucking noise with her mouth and her blue eyes rolled to one side. "I didn't know what happened, her energy just went down and she told me 'Mommy, I'm tired' and she just started staring into space," said Cassie's mother, Stacey Lyons. In a panic the mother of two, quickly picked up the phone and called 911. Once the paramedics arrived, Stacey learned that her, then, three-and-a-half year old daughter was having a seizure, and had to be transported to a hospital, immediately. |

Letter taken from the Burlington Post May 23, 2008 On Nov. 6, 2007, much of Burlington heard and/or read about a car accident on Woodward Street and Guelph Line that resulted in our brother and son, Robert, being airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. On the morning of the accident there were many different parties involved, ensuring that Robert immediately received the best possible care. We owe immeasurable gratitude to the Halton Regional Police, the Burlington Fire Department, the Hamilton General Air-EMS team and the quick-thinking city employee who ran to the scene and extinguished the resulting car fire. We will be eternally grateful to the competent nursing staff, doctors and support workers at Hamilton General Hospital ICU and the 7th floor staff, as well as the 6th floor staff at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital and the staff at Chedoke's Acquired Brain Injury Facility. Our sincere thanks to all the staff and students at both Assumption Secondary School and St. Elizabeth Elementary School, for their immense generosity and heartfelt daily prayers. We are extremely appreciative for the incredibly generous response from IKEA Burlington, and the Halton Catholic Occasional Teachers' Unit. Alongside these incredible teams, there are many individuals, both friends and family, to whom we owe our deepest gratitude. For the beautiful gift baskets, the monetary assistance, and multiple hospital visits, we thank you! "I can no other answer make, but, thanks, and thanks." -- William Shakespeare The Maher family, Burlington |
